Our four favorite fall hikes at Deep Creek Lake take you through some of the most beautiful terrain in the area. Leaf peepers will love the opportunity to immerse themselves in the brilliant colors of autumn as the trek along miles of scenic trails.

LOSTLAND RUN TRAIL – Potomac Garrett State Forest
One of Garrett County’s best kept secrets, this 3.5 mile trail is highlighted by Cascade Falls, towering hemlocks, and a short spur trail that leads to the Potomac Overlook with views of the river and mountains. Moderate in difficulty, it takes about two hours each way.
BRANT MINE TRAIL – Deep Creek Lake State Park
A popular hike is the half mile Brant Mine Trail leading hikers to the site of the historic Brant coal mine and homesite. The mine was worked by the Brant family and supplied coal to local residents. Park naturalists or volunteers often lead hikes highlighting a variety of topics including bird watching and tree identification.
GREEN TRAIL – New Germany State Park
A great option for novice hikers, this flat trail follows Poplar Lick, a native brook trout stream. Ask about guided hikes for an interpretive experience with a park naturalist. Many other trails branch off of this one giving you options if you want a little more time with Mother Nature.
CANYON TRAIL – Swallow Falls State Park
Following the flow of the Youghiogheny River, this popular 1.5 mile trail provides lots of photo ops! It takes you along Muddy Creek Falls, highest in Maryland, Swallow Tails and scenic Swallow Falls. A slight detour will lead you to Tolliver Falls too.
Each of our four favorite fall hikes at Deep Creek Lake is filled with stunning foliage provided by sugar maple, red maple and black gum trees. Remember, the natural environment can be a bit rugged so play it safe when exploring the outdoors.
